I started this painting in Jim Berberich's class a few years ago and decided to finish it this week. I am surrounding it with jewels I have collected over the years from teachers who added an important step in my glass journey. It seemed an appropriate place to keep them, since the Icon this image came from is called "Christ the Teacher".
Last night I took an old jewel that was bought at Dick Millards auction and I painted Fred head on it. Since I was only firing to 1170 I thought unknown glass would be ok. But this is real soft glass and not only did it change shape under 1200F but it also divitrified real bad.
With fusible glass I would sand blast and refire to 1380 to shine it up. But I do not want to put this in the kiln again.
Would acid etching the front shine it up? I do not want to etch the back because Fred is just barely on it. It fired thin.Attached Image (viewed 137 times):
